The
Burmese python (Python molurus bivittatus) is found in Southeast
Asia, from Thailand to Vietnam, and in Indonesia on Java, Borneo and
Sulawesi.
Generally,
Burmese pythons are the best of the truly big python and boa species for
the ordinary keeper who wants a large snake. Females are larger than
males. Males only growing 14-15 feet and weighing an average of 130 pounds
are outstripped by the females who sometimes get to be as long as 19 feet
and weigh over 400 pounds. However, Burmese pythons can reach max lengths
longer than 20 feet.
Burmese pythons
require exceptionally clean cages. They should be supplied with water from
a non-porous metal bowl. Tree branches, hide spots, platforms, and twigs
set at different levels and angles will stimulate healthy activity
levels.
They should be
kept in temperatures of 80-87 degrees Fahrenheit and should be given a
heat rock set at at around 85 degreed Fahrenheit for your snake to warm up
at any time it chooses to.
Burmese pythons,
like others, are carnivorous and will eat rodents such as small rats,
hamster, gerbils, and mice. They should be fed about once a week.
