The black rhino is born black. As it grows older, it begins to take on the
color of it's surroundings, usually a dark brown or even yellow.
Males live alone in
their marked territory, and mate during any time in the year. On average,
each rhino has a baby every 2-3 years. The babies are born at almost 90
lbs. and by age 7 will reach their full growth potential.
The rhinos will eat leaves, roots, and
fruits. They spend some time of the day taking a mud bath, if it is
available to help keep them cool in the hot sun.
Since the 50's, Earth has lost over 60,000 black rhinos. The
population decreased from 70,000 to 10,000. The main cause of the rhinos
endangerment is due to poaching. Even though laws prohibit this, it is
done illegally making the hunter a very wealthy man.
In order to help stop poaching, parks and zoos removed 100 horns of black
rhinos. The operation just removed the horn, the animal was not injured,
but this did not stop the poaching. Many of the rhinos which were given
the operation were hunted and killed. About 90 percent of all deaths of
black rhinos are due to poaching. Their horns are worth thousands of
dollars on the black market, and the risk of hunting these glorious
animals is well worth it to poachers. |
